The Edublogger has a great post on digital storytelling resources and guidelines. The post is based on this wiki by Alan Levine, but I think you will find it easier to follow the links in the blog than to try to navigate the wiki.
Digital stortytelling is not just for English and reading. You can use it for assessment in any discipline. When students create their own product, they are able to show more accurately what they have learned than if they take an objective test. I can guarantee most of them will have more fun creating than taking a test.
Using digital storytelling as assessment will engage the students and prepare them for the Internet dominated work world they will enter. It will also make their learning more relevant because they use the Internet so much themselves.
FYI--I found out about this blog post from a post on Twitter. We can learn so much from the social web.

Thanks for sharing my post with your readers. You mentioning twitter is the exact reason why I tell bloggers now to also use Twitter as it is an important traffic source.
