I found a free product, Video Pad, that allows importing of mp4 files. The completed videos can only be exported as wmv, avi, or afs, but since we have all these Windows computers, that works okay.
The interface is similar to most other video editors, so the students are able to use it with little instruction. The real test will come tomorrow when I help them save the videos. Encoders need to be installed for that, and neither students nor teachers have install rights. I hope I can make it work.
