How Important is the Internet in Your Instruction?

By now, we all (or most) recognize the convenience of using the Internet in our instruction.

However, I would say most of us don't understand the importance of using it to reach our students, and even further, to teach them the proper use of it and how it can benefit them.

And that doesn't even involve adding something new to your curriculum. It just involved applying those principles with your normal instruction.

I found this article the other day that made me think about the the importance of preparing our students for proper use of the Internet because it plays such a huge role in the lives of most of us. You can read the entire article here, but I have included what I consider to be the main points. (The article is pretty short.)

  • First, teachers and administrators must acknowledge the extraordinary power of the Internet.
  • Secondly, educators need to develop, adopt and implement curricula to equip students with essential technology skills.
  • Next, students need multiple opportunities to practice applying these technology literacy skills.
  • Remember, seeking advice on the Internet is like eating at a cheap buffet. Although there's an endless supply, only some items are good and even fewer are good for you.
