Here is an interesting article published in The Times that discusses the way students learn. The author insists that the need for memorizing facts is no longer necessary because of the depth and breadth of information that is available with just a mouse (or trackpad) click.
His views are similar to those I heard expressed by Dan Pink, except that Mr. Pink believes that "left brain" activities are still necessary as a foundation, but that creativity ("right brain" learning) is more important.
