Let's Get Into the 21st Century

Click below to watch a video that is meant to inspire you.

You may have seen this video more than once, but it's worth watching often. It reminds me of how we need to engage our students with the tools that are a part of their every day lives. I know I've said that many times. I'll probably say it many times more.

If you read my email from today, you know that I participated in a webinar for the PBS site Vote 2008. Many of you might not even know what a webinar is. You should find out.

The PBS site rocks, and it's not just for social studies teachers. It promotes critical thinking by using the social web. It has three main sections:

  • Access--These lessons are designed to engage and motivate students' interest in the political process and social media tools.

  • Analyze--These lessons are designed to engage students in critique and evaluation of various types of media messages using key concepts of media literacy.

  • Act--These lessons are designed to help students explore the ways in which they can take action on political and social issues using social media tools.

Each section contains lesson plans you can use and even download. They're not typical lesson plans; they really do promote higher order thinking.

When you get to the site, look for the green Go button on the right under "Curriculum Guide and Web Resources." That will take you to the blueprint where you can access each section. That's not the only way to get to each section, but I like that part because of the cool animations.

Look around. It's full of great stuff. I'm sure you will find something to engage and educate your students.

Have fun.
